Why crippled calendar app on iPod touch would be great mistake and why it won’t
September 10, 2007 |
Generally, iPod touch is great device. It’s almost perfect pocket internet tablet. Even more. I wanted to buy this device, but… But now I’m not sure I’ll be among first when it hits stores. Why? Because I’m really stick into calendaring and I’m looking for great pocket device for this purpose. My phone not so bad for this, but when I see iPod touch I decided here it is. Best Pocket Organizer Ever (as mac user I like Apple devices). But become one more customer? No. Not today. Why? Lack of add-new-event feature in upcoming iPod touch. It’s important to me. And for hundreds and thousands of disappointed users who wanted to buy this thing. Do you want to know what is more disappointing? iPhone. iPhone with Calendar which allow user to add events on the go. As rumored iPhone and iPod touch have similar OS and almost similar hardware. Why Apple added one more reason (additionally to the lack of e-mail and notes apps, weather and stocks widgets) not to buy this thing? To skyrocket iPhone sales? May be. To handle initial demand for it? May be. One more reason to talk and discuss this device among blogs and news sites? Surely. And may be this is one of the most real reasons. Let’s remember iPhone start. How often were possible scratches for iPhone discussed? Apple strikes back: glass instead of plastic. 8Gb iPhone price down? Here is your 100$ back in Apple Store Credit.
Will we see more apps and full-featured (compared to iPhone) Calendar in iPod touch from the Day 1? I think so. All we should - not to wait silently
Does anybody know e-mail for feedback about iPod touch? May be steve@apple.com will work great again?
P.S. And why not will it be for real? Because Apple done almost right with iPhone and I believe do the same thing about next-big-thing - iPod touch. Do you agree?

Why crippled calendar app on iPod touch would be great mistake and why it won’t…
Some thoughts about crippled Calendar app on upcoming iPod touch….
Hard read to is this? English write good no you.
I would agree that the iPhone is almost perfect. However, it is pointless for me, since I can’t carry a cameraphone into work. There’s not much point in spending that much money on a phone I have to leave locked in the car all day!
I was looking forward to the iPod Touch as a new iPod with light pda functions. All I need is a calendar and contacts list. I thought this would be an adequate holdover until someday I can buy an iPhone without a camera.
Apple has a tendency to avoid including the functionality we want. I guess they figure the new iPod touch will get by on the Apple name, like all their products.
I agree - stupid decision to leave off the Calendar editing feature - but mostly because it will push me to use my Google calendar which will be accessible online - so Apple will be driving me - a loyal Apple user since Lisa and II - to use software other than their own. Loose Loose Steve - but a great product.
The other example of this is Apple’s failure to address a really common family issue - sync certain applications across a family/small business Airport network. They make us use .Mac which is an expensive solution for many broadband folks, and impossible for dial up clients. They need a simple sync capability for calendars, address books, even mail and Itunes (on registered machines)
The rest of their stuff is so damned good and elegant

I’ll try to improve my English. Sorry.
Todd, Can’t agree MORE with you words about iPod touch.
Jen, shame on Apple for such actions and products. But I can add that anything else often has more functionality but less useful.
Simon, if web-based software everything user need than iPod touch is GREAT device.
Thanks for your post, I agree with you completely. I am new to Macs (just bought my first MacBook and iPod in July) and watched the iPod touch release moment by moment on the internet as it was being announced. It seemed too good to be true and I was very impressed with Apple, but it has surprised me that they would cut the calendar functionality and not include some type of note-taking application. I’m not too familiar with hacking, especially with Apple products because they have always seemed to make sure great products, but I suppose if that’s what it takes to make the iPod touch useful as a PDA, then that’s what it will take. Instead of pre-ordering mine, like I and hundreds of others were planning to do, I think I’m gonna wait it out and see how Apple responds. I hope they do right by their customers and try not to disable a device just to sell more of another. If everyone has either an iPhone or iPod touch, I think that would be great for Apple. I hope they impress me again.
Travis, I agree with you. I think removing functionality from iPod touch is what iPhone partners want. And I think Apple’ll add functionality after sevral months. I hope so otherwise I wouldn’t buy this thing and many thousands do the same thing. And now let’s just wait.
I consider the lack of add functionality a total deal-breaker for me with the iPod touch. However, for anyone looking to use Google Calendar instead and still want to use iCal on their desktop, there’s a sweet app called Spanning Sync (spanningsync.com) that does a great job of synching the two bi-directionally.
Richard, thanks for great link and I agree with you.
